Patriots, Chiefs, Landmark and Mercy get wins
Sandy Creek (2-1) got off to a slow start but cruised in their first home game of the season, beating Alexander 41-0.
The Patriots got two field goals from Zach Lopez (43, 36), three touchdowns from Rajion Neal (runs of 31, 82, and 29 yards), one from Alex Chisum (14 yard touchdown catch) and one from Derrick Alexander (one yard run). Neal had 140 yards rushing on nine carries, while quarterback Ronnie Bell threw for 178 yards and a touchdown. Jarrett Davis was the leading receiver with five catches for 95 yards.
Defensively, Cameron Bush and Clinard Stokes each had an interception. Isaiah Johnson had 11 tackles, while Mike Spaulding had seven tackles and Chaz Johnston had six tackles.
Sandy Creek (2-1) will host Osborne on Friday. The Cardinals (2-1) beat Woodland, Bartow 37-33 last week.
McIntosh (2-1) picked up their second win of the season by defeating Lithia Springs on the road 38-18. Cam Porter (89 yards rushing) and Darius Miliam (202 total yards) both had two touchdowns and Andrew Graham (18 total tackles, three sacks, two tackles for a loss) once again led the defense with a great effort. Other standouts defensively were Clay Carroll (six tackles, an interception), Brian Harper (four tackles and an interception) and Daniel Price (11 tackles).
“I was proud of the way our kids fought hard after getting down right off the bat. We had a few starters out due to injury and sickness but some players stepped up and played well,” said head coach Glenn Griffin. “We gave up too many yards but we were able to keep the ball in front of us and keep them out of the endzone the second half. We are playing a little better each week.”
McIntosh will host the Northside, Columbus Patriots (2-1) on Friday. The Patriots lost to Central, Carroll 23-0 last week.
Armani Cato (77 yards rushing) scored a touchdown for Fayette County (1-2) and Michael Martin (seven total tackles) returned an interception for another touchdown, but the Tigers lost to Douglas County 14-12. Eric Lauderale had six catches for 65 yards. Leaders on defense were Jonathan Seldon, nine total tackles and one sack, Derrick Cannon, eight total tackles, and Martinek Adamson, seven total tackles.
The Tigers will play at Luella (1-1) on Friday. The Lions were off last week. They lost to Ola 29-28 the week earlier.
Starr’s Mill (1-2) lost to Tri-Cities 24-23. Tri-Cities had an early lead on the Panthers but the two teams were tied 17-17 at the half and entering the fourth quarter. In the final period, the Bulldogs scored seven points and Starr’s Mill had six. The Panthers went for two points after scoring a touchdown with 17 seconds remaining but could not covert. Zach Laskey led the Panthers rushing with 67 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Adam Holley was 11 of 20 for 167 yards and a touchdown pass to Jeffrey Greene (six catches for 120 yards). Payne Spencer kicked a 36 yard field goal and was 2-for-2 on PATs.
Starr’s Mill hosts Sprayberry (1-2) on Friday. The Yellow Jackets beat Northwest Whitfield 28-7 last week for their first win.
Whitewater had a 13-0 lead on Mays in the fourth quarter thanks to a touchdown run from Josh Clemons and two field goals from Dylan Johnson, but after the lights at the stadium went out and came back on a few minutes later Mays surged back with two touchdowns. Blake Jaurigue blocked an extra point to force overtime, but Mays won it in the extra period 19-13.
Landmark Christian (1-2) defeated Pace Academy 41-21. The War Eagles had 375 yards rushing with Austin Broussard rushing for 158 yards on 18 carries for three touchdowns, while Gabe Cobb had 147 yards rushing on 16 carries and a touchdown. Carson Barnett threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns, one to his brother, Zach (six receptions for 98 yards) and Wade Kemp (2 catches for 23 yards).
Defensively, Broussard had 10 tackles, while Cody Nichols had nine tackles and a forced fumble and Chase McFarlin had his first interception of his career.
Landmark will play at Our Lady of Mercy on Friday.
Our Lady of Mercy (1-1) defeated North Cobb Christian 26-0. Dave Mann rushed for 129 yards on 13 carries for three touchdowns. Daniel Wesley blocked a field goal and Kyle Sharp returned it 64 yards for a touchdown.
