Breast cancer made all the headlines recently with the disclosure that Amy Mickelson, wife of pro golfer Phil Mickelson, was ill with the disease. Meanwhile, some local ladies continued their ongoing fight against the illness.

Boys and girls, ages 7-18, around Metro Atlanta and North Georgia participated Wednesday in an Atlanta Junior Golf event at Fayetteville Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ga. where winners were crowned in various age and skill divisions.

Fayetteville’s Brian Covington (85) placed fourth in in the 18-Hole Open Boys 15-18 . Peachtree City’s Morgan Jory placed fourth in the 18-Hole Club Girls 7-18 division with a 102.

Fayetteville’s Albert Lambert placed fourth in the 9-Hole Club Boys 12 and Under division with a 60.

On Wednesday, Apr. 18, the Starr’s Mill High School girls golf team won the region tournament at Durham Lakes Golf Course.

Despite the tough economy and a rainy day, the Fayette Chamber’s 21st annual Business on the Green Classic was successfully held on Wednesday, Apr. 2.

The Children's Charity Christmas Golf Tournament will be held at the Flat Creek golf course at 9 a.m. on Dec. 5. This is the 25th anniversary of the tournament collecting toys to distribute to local children in need. The toys are given through the Real Life Center.

Starr’s Mill standout Andrew Garner has accepted an athletic scholarship to play Golf for Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.

Krista Battalio is a 37-year-old mother of Cooper Battalio (5-years old) and wife of Michael Battalio. Krista has been recently diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer (“IBC”). Krista was diagnosed with IBC in July 2008 and, unfortunately, her condition is far more advanced than anyone could have imagined. The Wendell Coffee Golf Center will offer junior golf camps over Thanksgiving (Nov. 24-25), Christmas (Dec. 22-23, Dec. 29 and 30), Winter (Feb. 16-19) and Spring Break (April 6-9). The camps are designed to teach children the basics of golf and how much fun the sport can be. Each camper will learn the set up, the swing, the pitch and chip shots, sand shots, the putting stroke and how to hit the woods. Each camper will also receive different instruction according to his or her level of play.
