Bedrosian heads list of area Major League Baseball draftees
East Coweta High School knew it had an ace in pitcher Cam Bedrosian.
He now has made the jump to elite status, having been drafted 29th overall by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2010 Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Bedrosian has “outstanding stuff” including a mid-90s fastball and a solid slider, and he has a good feel for pitching, according to his MLB scouting report. At six feet tall, he doesn’t have a traditional pitcher’s height, but any lack in that department is more than made up with a heavy dose of competitiveness and mound smarts, according to the scouting report.
Bedrosian sports an over-the-top delivery not often seen among ballplayers today, and he also has one other major bonafide: major league baseball is in his genes. He is the son of former big league hurler Steve Bedrosian, who spent 14 years with three different teams, beginning and ending his career in Atlanta.
The elder Bedrosian won a Cy Young award as the top pitcher in the National League in 1987 when he racked up 40 saves.
Cam Bedrosian has committed to play baseball at perennial powerhouse Louisiana State University, so he’s a winner even if he decides to go to college first.
Other area athletes selected in the draft were Fayette County High School’s Cartier Goodrum, 71st overall by the Minnesota Twins, Sandy Creek High School’s Alvin Toles, 137th overall by the Florida Marlins, Starr’s Mill High School’s Myles Jaye by the Toronto Blue Jays (516th) and Auburn University’s Brian Fletcher, a former Starr’s Mill player, by the Kansas City Royals (539th).
