By Michael Boylan - Posted on 17 May 2010

Whitewater’s varsity baseball team (23-6) has been cruising lately. The Wildcats won their first two playoff series in two games, have won eight in a row and haven’t scored under five runs since Apr. 19. Whitewater beat Hilllgrove 7-1 and 8-6 last week to make the Class AAAA quarterfinal. The Wildcats got solid at bats in the series from Alex Liquori, Tanner Dingler, Joel Van Asch, Kyle Dearing and Garrett Knowles among others.

The win pits them against the Jones County Greyhounds tomorrow with the doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.

The Greyhounds (25-4) have won 19 in a row and six of those have been by 10 runs or more. Jones County has also swept their way into the state quarterfinals, knocking off Griffin (14-8 and 22-12) and Harlem (9-4 and 6-2).

The winner of this series will meet the winner of Alcovy and Marist next Monday.

The Wildcats are the only team with local ties still alive. Landmark Christian lost to Wesleyan last week, two games to one. Wesleyan won the opener 6-3 but Landmark won the second 6-5. In the third and deciding game the following afternoon, Landmark lost 19-4. The War Eagles ended the season with a record of 28-3.
