All four 5-AAAA girls soccer teams in quarterfinals
If you were worried about the Marist girls team upsetting one of the Fayette teams hopes for a state title, you don’t have to worry about them anymore this year. Make sure you thank a McIntosh Lady Chief.
The fourth ranked McIntosh varsity girls soccer team (16-4) produced their biggest win of the season on Wednesday night, handing third ranked Marist a 1-0 loss and advancing to the Class AAAA quarterfinals. Goalkeeper Nikki Atkinson made some crucial saves, Brittany Schmidt was just one of the stalwats on defense and Emily Lecomte put the winning goal in the net with just six minutes left in regulation. The Lady Chiefs will now travel to take on fifth ranked Glynn Academy (17-1-2) on Friday at 6 p.m. McIntosh is 3-0 against ranked teams in the state playoffs. Glynn Academy is 1-1-1 all season against ranked teams. McIntosh has won five in a row and hasn’t allowed a goal yet in two state playoff games. The winner of this game will meet the winner of Starr’s Mill and Lee County next Wednesday.
Starr’s Mill cruised in their second round state playoff game. The Lady Panthers, ranked second in Class AAAA, crushed South Paulding 9-0. The win puts them in the state quarterfinals at Lee County on Saturday. Starr’s Mill has won 11 games in a row and has defeated six teams ranked in the state in that span. Lee County is 2-2-1 against teams ranked in the state this season, but has faced a lot of teams with winning records and scored 104 goals while allowing just 14. Starr’s Mill has scored 117 and allowed 12. In their 11 game win streak, they have posted six shutouts.
Whitewater’s top ranked girls soccer team survived a close game with Sequoyah, winning 2-1. Taylor Marks had both goals for Whitewater and head coach Heather Allen stated that both Kathryn Tracy and Courtney Reddig had good games. The Lady Wildcats (17-2-1) will now host 10th ranked Lakeside, Evans (16-3) on Saturday. The winner of this match will meet the winner of Northgate and Wayne County in the state semifinal. Lakeside, Evans is 1-1 against ranked opponents this season. They beat seventh ranked Thomas County Central 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinal. Whitewater has scored 105 goals this season and allowed nine.
Northgate’s Lady Vikings made the quarterfinals as well. They beat Rome 3-0 on Wednesday. Their victory put all four area 5-AAAA teams that made the state playoffs in the Elite Eight. Northgate will play at Wayne County on Saturday. They are riding a seven game winning streak with three straight 3-0 shutouts. They have scored 73 goals this season and allowed 23. Wayne County has won four in a row. They beat Harris County 5-1 to make the quarterfinals.
