Second round of soccer playoffs full of local teams
The second round of the state soccer playoffs starts this week and the match-ups are a lot more intense.
Landmark Christian School’s boys, region champions in 5-AA/A, handed Pacelli a 4-0 loss last Thursday to improve to 13-1 on the year. They host second ranked Thomasville (14th in the state) at 3:30 p.m. yesterday. A win for Landmark would put them in the state quarterfinals on Friday against either Athens Academy or Greater Atlanta Christian. Thomasville is 15-0-4. They have scored 90 goals, allowed 10 and have won six games in a row, including a 7-1 win over Pierce County in the first round of the state tournament.
McIntosh (18-1) hosts Hillgrove (15-2-2) tonight and is in line for another home game on Friday with a win. If the Chiefs move on they will play the winner of Hardaway and Evans. Hillgrove beat eighth ranked North Springs 1-0 to advance to the second round.
Starr’s Mill (15-3-1) is on the road tonight against Dalton(14-2-1). Dalton lost to McIntosh and Habersham Central this season, but recently beat Hillgrove. The winner will take on the winner of Lakeside, Evans and Thomas County Central on Friday.
Whitewater (10-8-1) faces third ranked Lakeside, DeKalb (13-2) last night for a chance to meet the winner of Glynn Academy and Upson Lee on Friday. The Wildcats lost to Lakeside, DeKalb 1-0 on Apr. 13. Lakeside’s losses were to Parkview and fourth ranked Marist.
The girls games are all scheduled for Wednesday night.
Whitewater (16-2-1), ranked first in AAAA and third in the state, faces Sequoyah (14-2) at 7 p.m. and the winner will meet the winner of Lakeside, Evans and Thomas County Central on Saturday. Seqouyah’s losses came against eighth ranked South Paulding and Kell (7-7)
Starr’s Mill (17-2), ranked second in AAAA and sixth in the state, plays at undefeated South Paulding (16-0), ranked eighth in AAAA, at 6 p.m. Only five of South Paulding’s wins came against teams with a winning record. The winner will play at the winner of Evans and Lee County on Saturday.
McIntosh (15-4), ranked fourth in AAAA and 14th in the state, plays at Marist (15-3-1), third in AAAA and 11th in the state, at 6 p.m. tonight. Marist has won six games in a row and all three losses were to teams outside of Class AAAA. The winner takes on the winner of Glynn Academy and Upson Lee on Saturday.
