Big wins in region for several local teams
There's still a lot of baseball to be played but teams are making some moves in the standings.
Whitewater improved to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the region with a 7-2 win over Starr’s Mill last Friday. The win marked their third in four games. Hayden Jordan pitched a complete game, two-hitter with 13 strikeouts. D;monte Grissom was 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, while Alex Liquori was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two doubles. Justin Toro also drove in a run with a double. The Wildcats play at Banneker today and will host Fayette County at 7 p.m. Friday and Northgate at 11 a.m. on Saturday. During spring break, they will play in the HIT tournament in Charleston, S.C.
Starr’s Mill (4-4, 2-3 region) will also play in that tournament but not before a game with Mays today, at Sandy Creek on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and at home against McIntosh at 1 p.m.
Sandy Creek (8-3, 4-2 region) lost to Northgate 12-3 last Tuesday after taking a 3-0 lead on the Vikings but followed it with wins over Tri-Cities (11-1 in six innings) and Fayette County (3-2) before losing to McIntosh 5-2 this past Monday. The Patriots play at Alexander today and host Starr’s Mill on Friday before a double header at Middle Georgia College next Wednesday.
The McIntosh Chiefs (5-6, 2-3 region) had arguably their biggest win of the season on Monday against Sandy Creek. Dwight Smith hit two home runs, while Tyler Gressens drive in two runs. Micah Carthern made several great plays at shortstop and Matt Appelman and Matt Winn both pitched well. Last week, the Chiefs edged Fayette County 4-3 on Tuesday and lost to Lithia Springs 8-4 on Wednesday. McIntosh hosts Douglas County today at 5:30 p.m. and plays at Starr’s Mill Saturday. They will have spring break off.
Fayette County (2-13, 0-6 region) lost to Villa Rica 7-3 in between their losses to McIntosh and Sandy Creek last week but picked up a 9-2 win over Dutchtown on Saturday. Steven Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Micah Smith was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Liam McDermott was 3-for-5 and Chris Caldwell earned the win with four innings pitched. This past Monday, the Tigers took on Northgate and lost 7-0. Fayette County plays at Tri-Cities today and at Whitewater on Friday. They will be off the week of spring break.
In Class A baseball, Landmark Christian is a perfect 13-0 (4-0 region). The War Eagles beat Pace Academy 11-2 last Wednesday, handed Holy Innocents a 13-3 loss and defeated Providence Christian 12-4 on Monday. Landmark has scored in double digits in eight of their 13 wins. Dustin Brantley defeated Pace on Mar. 24, going seven complete innings. He was also the winning pitcher on Mar. 30 going the complete game (5 innings). Jon Roberts pitched a tremendous game v. Holy Innocents on Friday, Mar.26, picking up his fourth win of the year. Colby Wren, Seth Wessinger and Dustin Brantley hit homers in the win and Blake Austin had three hits. Josh Bailey picked up a complete game victory on Mon. Mar. 29. Roberts had two homers and Austin had one. Austin leads the team in avg. 425, home runs with 6 and RBI with 23. Landmark will play at Our Lady of Mercy today at 5 p.m. and will host Bremen tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Our Lady of Mercy (1-8, 1-4 region) lost to Holy Innocents 20-5 last Tuesday but earned their first win of the season last Thursday beating Pace Academy 5-4. On Monnday, the Bobcats lost to Mt. Paran 8-4.
