Sandy Creek's Wojcik wins second straight state title
One local wrestler captured a state title this weekend at the Georgia High School wrestling championships - Sandy Creek’s Derek Wojcik, a state champ last year as well.
Wojcik was 47-0 this year and won 177 matches in his career. He was a state placer all four years, taking sixth as a freshman, third as a sophomore and winning state titles the last two years.
Fayette County’s varsity wrestling team placed eighth overall at the Class AAAA state wrestling tournament, while Whitewater placed 12th, McIntosh placed 17th, Sandy Creek placed 18th and Starr’s Mill placed 51st.

145 - Austin Vorwald, Fayette County, 4th; Matt Lein, McIntosh, 6th
152 - Dylan Tanner, Fayette County, 4th; Rickey Oskey, McIntosh, 5th
160 - Derek Wojcik, Sandy Creek, 1st; Tyler Stanford, Whitewater, 5th
285 - Sean Carney, McIntosh, 3rd; Martinek Adamson, Fayette County, 5th
Landmark Christian took 13th at the Class A state tournament. Chris Johnson, a junior at Landmark Christian School from Fayetteville, won the 215 lbs. weight class in the West Section Single-A Tournament held in Bremen on Feb. 16. He competed in the state tournament at Gwinnett Arena last week and was state runner-up for the Class A. Teammate Ryan Thames, a junior from Palmetto, placed third at the West Section Single-A tournament for the 112 lbs. weight class and third at the state tournament.
