Whitewater and Sandy Creek finish second and third in state
Whitewater and Sandy Creekâs quests for a Class AAAA state softball title came up short over the weekend and, unsurprisingly, the road to the championship ran through each other two more times.
The Lady Wildcats opened the Elite Eight in Columbus with two shutouts, a 2-0 win over Hardaway and an 8-0 win over Sandy Creek. The wins put Whitewater in a game against Marist, the eventual state champion, and the Lady Wildcats fell short 3-1.
Sandy Creek opened the Elite Eight with a 3-1 win over Jones County and followed it with the 8-0 loss to Whitewater. Sandy Creek stayed alive in the tournament with a 4-0 win over Evans and a 3-2 win over Northgate before being eliminated by Whitewater 5-2.
In the championship game, Whitewater once again faced Marist and lost, this time by a score of 2-1.
Marist won the AAAA state championship and was followed by Whitewater as AAAA state runner-up, Sandy Creek in third place and Northgate in fourth.
