Starr's Mill girls host second annual Girls Night Out on Saturday

By Michael Boylan - Posted on 19 January 2010

Four of the five girls basketball teams from Fayette County schools will participate in the second annual Girls Night Out at Starr’s Mill this Saturday.

The event is aimed at raising money for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund which finances breast cancer research.  It is part of the V Foundation for Cancer Research aimed at women’s cancers.

The goal for the event, according to Starr’s Mill head coach Whitt Jones, is $5,000.

“I saw some of the college teams a couple years ago playing the PINK games in honor of Kay Yow.  I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about her.  She was truly a pillar of the girls game and her struggle with breast cancer (she had it three different times) brought a ton of attention to the fight for a cure,” Jones said.  “Last season I tried to focus more on big picture issues instead of only focusing on basketball. I felt as a girls basketball coach, this is a cause that will be personal to these girls. Many of them know someone who has struggled with breast cancer. Some of them may struggle with it one day themselves. If we are going to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, this is a great cause to be a part of.”

The event also promises to be a great deal of fun with some solid matches throughout the day. Things get started at 2 p.m. with Starr’s Mill taking on East Coweta. This game is a rematch from last year’s event. At 3:30 p.m, McIntosh will meet Woodward Academy, at 5 p.m., Brookwood and Whitewater tangle and the final match of the evening is Sandy Creek vs. Rome, the second ranked team in Class AAAA, at 6:30 p.m.

Outside the gym there will be a family fun zone with several inflatables (like a moon walk).  T-shirts, hats, and other items will be on sale during the event as well as baked goods.
Door prizes donated by a host of sponsors will be given out during each game and there will be various contests played during the day to get fans involved.  It will be a great atmosphere for the whole family and all proceeds go to a great cause.
