Tigers win South Metro wrestling tournament

Fayette County won the South Metro wrestling tournament, ahead of Woodward Academy (2nd) and Henry County (3rd).

Individual champions for the Tigers were seniors Austin Vorwald (145) and Dylan Tanner (152). Other placers for Fayette County were Daniel Ward (103) and Martinek Adamson (285) in third place, Cody Griffin (215) in fourth, Blake Axelberg (125) in fifth and Chris Chennault (112) in sixth.

“The last time we won the South Metro tournament was in 1989, my first year as head coach,” said Fayette County coach Jim Bailey. “I like to win it once every 20 years.”

Both Vorwald and Tanner went 5-0 in the tournament and faced some challenges on their way to individual titles in their semifinal matches. Vorwald was up 7-2 on an opponent from McIntosh and found himself tied 7-7 before winning 9-7 in overtime. Tanner had an early 2-0 lead on an opponent from Union Grove and had to go to triple overtime to win the match.

The team results for other local schools were as follows: McIntosh in fifth, Whitewater in eighth, Sandy Creek in 16th, Starr’s Mill in 25th.

McIntosh’s state placers were Sean Carney (285) in second, Ricky Oskey (152) and Matt Lien (145) in third, Trent Shallow (103) in fourth and Josh McClendon (140) in sixth.

Sandy Creek’s Derek Wojcik (171) placed first, while Dylan Schouw(135) took second.

Whitewater’s placers were Austin penland (119) in first, Alex Kidd (125) in second, Tyler Stanford (171) in third and John Alexander (140) and Josh Burns (152) in fifth.

Fayette County will host their annual Christmas Classic on Dec. 29 and 30.
