Top cats in the county for six straight years

Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls can’t claim that their six championships were “in a row”, but the 2009 Whitewater Middle School Lady Wildcats’ softball team can.

The Wildcats wrapped up their regular season play in first place with a record of 9 – 1. The one blemish on their season came early in September, but was exactly what the Lady Wildcats needed to refocus their energy according to head coach Denise Roth. “We were all given a serious wake-up call by that loss. It was actually a positive experience for us because after that game, the ladies’ intensity and determination rose to a whole new level and we (the entire team) peaked exactly when a coach hopes her team will peak – tournament time,” commented Coach Roth.

The Lady Cats entered the tournament as the number one seed and their goal to defend their championship tradition was very obvious to all spectators.

The Eagles of Flat Rock Middle fell to Whitewater Middle first by a score of 16 – 0. Next it was the Panthers’ of Rising Starr turn to try to knock off the Wildcats. However, it only took Whitewater four innings to send the Panthers’ to the losers’ bracket with an 8 – 0 loss.

The Panthers’ came out of the losers’ bracket to have to face the Lady Wildcats again in the championship game only to suffer another loss this time by a score of 10 - 2 in five innings.
This championship makes it the Lady Wildcats sixth in a row and makes their combined overall record for those six years a remarkable 71-3.
