Whitewater makes state softball championship, falls short to Marist

By Michael Boylan - Posted on 24 October 2009

Whitewater’s Lady Wildcat varsity softball team took the long road to the state final, but their quest for a AAAA state championship fell short.

Whitewater (37-3) lost their opening game in the Elite Eight, 21- to Evans, but won their next four to make the championship game against Marist. The Lady Wildcats beat Ola 7-3, Jones County 4-3 in 10 innings, Sequoyah 2-0 and Northwest Whitefield 2-0.

In the championship game, Whitewater and Marist remained deadlocked at 0-0 until the ninth inning when Marist pulled ahead 1-0 and took home the AAAA title.

More details from Whitewater’s run to the championship game will appear in the Wednesday edition of The Citizen.
