FCHS cheerleaders win coveted leadership award

By Michael Boylan - Posted on 04 August 2009

The Fayette County High School varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders recently returned from cheerleading camp.  The camp, with over 800 participants from all over the state, was held at the University of Georgia in Athens and was administered by The Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA).

The varsity cheerleading team was awarded the coveted UCA Leadership Award.  The award, voted upon by the camp participants, honors the one team of athletes at camp that displays the most focus, leadership, sportsmanship, and all-around ability.  “At camp, the girls worked hard.  We were pleased with all the awards, but the leadership award really speaks to the character and dedication of these athletes.  We are looking forward to the season with anticipation,” said advisor Beth Amerson.

The varsity team also received first place in the Cheer Division of the camp championships and first place in the Extreme Routine championships.

Both the varsity and junior varsity teams received second place in their respective divisions for a Home Dance Routine that each of the teams prepared prior to the camp.

Four members of the varsity team were named UCA All Americans: Megan Anderson, Danielle Shaver, Cindy Nelson, and Niki Jenkins.  Deshana Barnes, LaNay Laster, and Kelsie Stampley were named All Americans from the junior varsity team.
Seniors Megan Anderson and Cindy Nelson were invited to tryout for positions with the UCA to instruct high school cheerleaders at camp next summer.

“I am very excited about the upcoming season with regard to games and competitions.  We have a lot of great athletes that are dedicated to the sport.  I think the chemistry of strong skills, character, and attitudes will make this the best season ever,” said Coach Darryl Lyons.

The program is directed by Coach Darryl Lyons and advisor Beth Amerson. Come out and support your Tiger cheerleaders and football team at the home opener at Tiger Stadium on Friday Aug. 28 vs. Stockbridge at 7 p.m.
