Flat Creek Niners ladies golf league battles breast cancer

By Michael Boylan - Posted on 30 June 2009

Breast cancer made all the headlines recently with the disclosure that Amy Mickelson, wife of pro golfer Phil Mickelson, was ill with the disease. Meanwhile, some local ladies continued their ongoing fight against the illness.

On Tuesday, June 9, ladies of the Flat Creek Niners raised over $3,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation by holding their annual golf tournament and rally.

Sue Slade, the social coordinator for the Niners, said, “We wanted to see how much money we could raise to support breast cancer research. We held silent auctions, raffles, and sold tickets to be in the rally.” The group played a pink ball/best ball tournament at the Flat Creek Course.

Many local businesses contributed to the success of the rally. Some made donations directly to  the Susan G. Komen Foundation, while others contributed prizes and products to be raffled and auctioned.

Canongate Golf Clubs also offered support for the rally by assisting with the games and offering golf packages as prizes and raffle items.
