Rotary honors “Grand Prix Race” series winners
The 2008-2009 Grand Prix Race series winners were honored at a recent Rotary Club of Peachtree City luncheon. Each winner received a special plaque in appreciation for participating in many races and for winning their age category. Jointly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Peachtree City and the Peachtree City Running Club, the race series began five years ago to promote youth exercise and good health, while providing fund raising opportunities for local elementary schools.
“The popularity of the Grand Prix series has grown with adults just as much as with the kids, which has been an unexpected plus,” said series coordinator and Rotary Club president, George Martin.
Over the last five years this series has expanded to 16 races and has raised over $400,000 for Fayette County elementary schools. This year alone, over 3,000 children and adults participated throughout the school year. Two years ago, Peachtree City’s Rotary Elementary School Grand Prix Race series received national recognition, winning the highest award given by the Road Runners Clubs of America.
The RRCA’s Kurt Steiner Children’s Development Award is given to the best children’s running program in the U.S. each year. For more information about the upcoming school year Rotary Elementary School Grand Prix series, go to the Peachtree City Rotary Grand Prix website at www.rotarygrandprix.org or to the local schools.
