State baseball quarterfinals set for Tuesday

Class AAAAA State Quarterfinals
East Coweta Indians (27-3) vs. Brookwood Broncos (20-10), 4 p.m. Tuesday

The Indians have gone 25-1 over their last 26 game with the lone loss in that period coming at the end of the regular season to Troup (8-3). East Coweta has since won five in a row and has outscored their opponents 39-9 in that span. The Indians beat Greenbrier 3-2 and 6-0 last week. Brookwood opened the season with five losses in their first 10 games but has won eight of their last nine and has scored in the double digits in six of those wins. The Broncos defeated Lassiter 6-4 and 6-5 in the playoffs last week to advance to this series.

Brookwood has won the last four meetings between these two teams, but the two teams have not met this year. East Coweta has scored 300 runs to Brookwood’s 192 and has allowed 61 this season to the Bronco’s 117.

The winner of this series meets the winner of Pope and Northside, Warner Robins on Monday.

Newnan Cougars (27-4) @ South Forsyth War Eagles (26-4)

Newnan has gone 14-1 since a 3-1 loss to East Coweta on Apr. 4. The Cougars topped Luella last week, winning the first game 5-0, losing the second 5-2 and winning the rubber match 4-2. Newnan has posted 10 shutouts this year.

The War Eagles have gone 9-2 over their last 11 games and have won eight straight. They beat Harrison last week to make the Elite Eight, winning the first game 1-0 and taking the second game 11-1.

The winner of this series meets the winner of Lowndes and East Paulding on Monday.

Class AAAA State Quarterfinals

Northgate Vikings (26-3) vs. South Effingham Mustangs (21-8)

The Vikings lost the last game of the regular season but have won six in a row since. They won the region title with a series win over Lithia Springs, defeated Forsyth Central in the opening round of the Class AAAA playoffs and beat Heritage, Conyers last week, winning the first game 4-0 and the second game 9-8. Northgate has scored in double digits in 15 of their wins and has posted 11 shutouts.

The Mustangs are 7-3 over their last 10 games. They beat Jones County in the first round of the playoffs (8-6 and 7-3) but went three games with Ola last week. They won the first game 4-1, fell in the second 9-2 and won the deciding game 2-1.

The winner of this series meets the winner of Marist and Lakeside, Evans on Monday.

Starr’s Mill Panthers (21-7) @ Wayne County Yellow Jackets (23-8) 4 p.m. Tuesday

The Panthers lost the last game of the regular season, falling 8-2 to Newnan, but has won four in a row since. They beat Chamblee in the first round of the state playoffs (5-3 and 12-4) and defeated Winder-Barrow last Wednesday (5-2, 4-1). Overall, Starr’s Mill is 9-1 over their last 10 games.

Wayne County is 7-3 over their last 10 games. Last week, they beat Alcovy 10-0 in the first game of their second round playoff series, lost game two 7-3 and won the rubber match 11-1. The Yellow Jackets have scored more runs than the Panthers (277-213) in three more games and have also allowed more runs (123-107).

The winner of this series meets the winner of Loganville and Evans on Monday.

Class A quarterfinals

Landmark Christian War Eagles (20-8-1) @ Pacelli Vikings (24-2), 4:30 p.m. Tuesday

Landmark is 8-2 over their last 10 games. They fell to Chapel Hill (a team from AAAAA) in the regular season finale and lost the second game of a three game series with Providence Christian last week. In three more games this season, Landmark has scored more runs (231-228) and allowed more (122-51).

Pacelli hasn’t lost to a Class A team all year and they only lost to one team from Georgia this season (Troup, 3-2 in eight innings on Mar. 18). The Vikings beat Landmark in the Class A state finals last year. They have won 10 in a row, scoring 90 runs and allowing 23 in that span.

The winner of this series meets the winner of Calvary Day and Bremen next Monday.
