Second round match-ups for state soccer playoffs
The second round of the state soccer playoffs start tomorrow and there are a number of local teams still active and seeking a spot in the quarterfinals.
Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers (11-4-2) vs. Loganville (12-4), Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.
The Starr’s Mill varsity girls soccer team, ranked fifth in Class AAAA, is on a four game winning streak since a 1-0 loss to Northgate on March 24. They haven’t given up a goal since then either. In the opening round of the Class AAAA state playoffs Starr’s Mill defeated Lakeside-DeKalb 5-0. It was their 10th shutout of the year.
Loganville has lost both games in which they have faced a ranked opponent this season, but both games have been close. They lost 3-2 to third ranked Salem on March 10 and 2-1 to seventh ranked Heritage on March 20. Since the loss to Heritage Loganville is 6-1 with four shutouts.
The winner of this game meets the winner of Ola and Upson Lee on Friday.
Whitewater Lady Wildcats (16-1) @ Hillgrove (13-2-3), 5:30 p.m. Tuesday
Whitewater, ranked second in Class AAAA and sixth in the state, hosted Forsyth Central in the opening round of the state playoffs and won 3-0. It marked their sixth straight win and third consecutive shutout. The Lady Wildcats have posted 11 shutouts this year and have only allowed nine goals total. They have scored 103 goals in their 17 games and have scored nine or more goals in a game eight times. Whitewater is 3-1 against ranked teams this season.
Hillgrove, ranked ninth, has faced only one ranked opponent this season. They lost to Harrison, ranked third in the state, 6-0 on Feb. 24. They haven’t lost a game since. To get to the second round, Hillgrove defeated Clarke Central 3-2. Hillgrove has won two games on penalty kicks this season and has posted eight shutouts along the way.
The winner of this game takes on the winner of Glynn Academy and Dutchtown on Friday.
McIntosh (19-0) vs. Apalachee (11-5-1), 7 p.m. Wednesday
The Chiefs, the top ranked team in AAAA and the state, have had the perfect season, thus far. They are 5-0 against ranked teams this season, have scored 78 goals, allowed seven and posted 12 shutouts. In the first round of the state playoffs, McIntosh defeated Tucker 3-1.
Apalachee has won six games in a row. They defeated Paulding County 1-0 last week to advance to this game. The only game against a ranked opponent on their schedule this year was a meeting against Habersham Central, ranked third in AAAA and ninth in the state, on March 10. Apalachee lost that game 7-0. McIntosh faced Habersham Central on March 23 and won 2-1.
The winner of this game faces the winner of Forest Park and Hardway on May 2.
Northgate Lady Vikings (17-2) @ Salem (16-3), 6 p.m. Tuesday
The Lady Vikings, rankled fourth in AAAA and 14th in the state, defeated Chamblee 1-0 to advance to the second round of the AAAA playoffs. Their two losses this season were to teams that have both made the second round of the playoffs in their respective classifcations (Whitewater and East Coweta). Northgate has posted 14 shutouts this year and has scored 96 goals while allowing eight.
Salem, ranked third in AAAA and 10th in the state, has lost to Parkview, ranked second in the state, Brookwood, ranked 11th in the state, and Pope. Against opponents from AAAA who are ranked, Salem is 2-0. They have won eight games in a row and posted five shutouts in that span. They have scored 101 goals and have allowed 17.
The winner of this game plays the winner of Thomas County Central and Evans on Friday.
East Coweta Lady Indians @ Greenbrier Lady Wolfpack (12-4-1), 5:30 p.m. Tuesday
The Lady Indians have won six games in a row since a 2-1 loss to Chapel Hill on March 23. They have posted four shutouts in that span. East Coweta defeated Jenkins 11-0 last week to make the second round of the AAAAA playoffs. They are 1-1 against ranked opponents this season.
Greenbrier, ranked seventh in AAAAA and 15th in the state, is 1-3 against ranked opponents this season. Their win was a 3-2 victory over Brookwood on Apr. 14. They are 5-0-1 since a 3-1 loss to second ranked Harrison. Greenbrier defeated Colquitt County 3-1 to advance to the second round of the playoffs.
The winner of this game takes on the winner of North Gwinnett and Alpharetta on Friday.
Newnan Lady Cougars (12-5) @ Warner Robins
Newnan has won two games in a row since droppng two consecutive games to county rivals Northgate and East Coweta. The Lady Cougars topped Savannah Arts 3-0 last week to advance to this game.
Warner Robins has won five games in a row, four of them by shutout. They have won three games in overtime this season, two of which were by penalty kicks.
The winner of this game meets the winner of Parkview and Lassiter on Friday.
East Coweta Indians (13-4) vs. Coffee (11-8)
The Indians, ranked ninth in Class AAAAA, have won two games in a row since losing to Northgate 4-3 in overtime of the Coweta Cup. East Coweta beat Jenkins 5-1 to make the second round of the playoffs.
Coffee beat Luella 1-0 to make the second round. It marked their second win in eight games. Coffee is 0-2 against ranked opponents this season.
