Mixed results for local teams in region basketball tournaments
Region basketball tournaments are in full swing during this winter break week and several local teams are now on a much longer break.
Starr’s Mill’s Lady Panthers won their play-in game against Tri-Cities last week 61-46 but lost to Douglas County on Monday 75-36. The Starr’s Mill boys lost to Northgate 43-37 in their play-in game last week.
Sandy Creek’s girls advanced to the second round of the region 5-AAAA tournament at Lithia Springs High School with a 55-15 win over Whitewater on Monday. The Lady Patriots will face Banneker at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The winner is guaranteed a spot in the Class AAAA state tournament and will face the winner of Mays and Northgate on Friday.
Northgate’s girls advanced in the tournament with a 44-25 win over McIntosh on Monday.
Today’s games will feature Whitewater vs. Mays at 4 p.m. and McIntosh vs. Northgate at 5:30 p.m.
In the region 5-A tournament, Our Lady of Mercy’s boys and girls both advanced to the second round. The girls defeated Atlanta International School 57-40 with Camille Thompson and Chyna Terrell both scoring 20 points a piece.
The boys also defeated AIS, 73-41, behind 11 points from Richy Obiora. The boys will meet Holy Innocents tonight and the girls will face Holy Innocents tomorrow.
Landmark Christian’s boys lost to Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy 66-34.
