In what looks to be the earliest start to high school soccer season that this reporter can remember, the local teams have taken the field and are ready to prove their mettle.

East Coweta’s boys and girls swept Houston County in their season opener.

The girls won 2-0 behind two goals from Heather Pierce, while the boys won 3-0 with Ryan Danford, Cameron Garner and Corey Geary scoring goals.

East Coweta will host Mundy’s Mill Friday night.

Newnan’s girls opened the season in the Longhorn tournament and lost to Parkview, the top ranked team in AAAAA and the state, 2-0. They took on Lakeside-DeKalb last night after the paper went to press. The boys also took on Parkview, ranked sixth in AAAAA and ninth in the state, in the Longhorn tournament and lost 6-0. They too faced Lakeside-DeKalb, ranked fifth in the state, last night.

Northgate’s boys opened their season with a 5-1 loss at Carrollton. The boys and girls, who are ranked sixth in AAAA, will play at Douglas County Friday night and will play at Villa Rica on Tuesday.

Fayette County’s boys soccer team opened the season with a 4-1 loss to Union Grove on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers did not play on Tuesday. Both the boys and girls will take on Spalding at Tiger Stadium on Friday.

McIntosh’s boys, ranked fifth in Class AAAA, will meet Thomas County Central Friday night. The Lady Chiefs, ranked second in AAAA and eighth in the state, will play at Walton tomorrow.
Whitewater’s boys, ranked second in AAAA and seventh in the state, opened with a 1-0 win over Lithia Springs on Tuesday. The Lady Wildcats, third in AAAA and 13th in the state, beat Lithia Springs 10-0. They played at Villa Rica last night after the paper went to press.

Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls opened with games against Mays on Monday. The Lady Panthers, ranked fifth in AAAA, and the boys team, ranked third in AAAA, both won 10-0. On Tuesday, the boys defeated Marist 3-2. Monday’s win marked boys coach Mike Hanie’s 200th career win. The girls will host Woodward Academy, ranked 10th in the state, Friday night. They and the boys will play at Lithia Springs on Tuesday.

Sandy Creek’s boys and girls will play at Lovejoy Friday.
