Three from Ippon Judo win lots of medals
While Ippon Judo, Jujitsu and Karate only brought three competitors to the University of Tennessee on Nov. 22, they walked away with a staggering nine medals; all three competitors shineed in the tournament.
Josh Briggs, 10, a 5th grader at Woodward Academy won bronze in the 9-10 light division. He also challenged up to the 11-12 division and copied his earlier feat with another bronze finish in a eight man division.
It was hard to say who had a better day or bragging rights with the Wojcik brothers. Younger brother Cody, an 8th grader at Flat Rock Middle School, claimed the best winning percentage and higher overall medals, while older brother, Derek 16, a junior at Sandy Creek High School, claimed more wins and more medals. Either way, Dad , who is also Coach, was proud of all his competitors.
Cody claimed two gold medals and a silver medal in the 13-14 light, 13-14 med and 15-16 light divisions going 10-1 on the day. He had a total of 17 competitors in his divisions.
Derek won three gold medals and one bronze medal and went 12-2 on the day. He easily won two 15-16 divisions winning all by instant win. Derek then challenged up to the black belt open divisions where he was by far the youngest competitor. Derek went 4-0 in one division winning an eight-man division, again winning all by full-point, instant win. Derek tried his hand at a higher weight class and went 2-2 taking third place out of eight. Derek finished the day with 3 gold’s and one bronze and a 12-2 record.
