Whitewater softball 4-0 in state playoffs
Whitewater started the Class AAAAA state playoffs on the road last week. They faced Thomas County Central, region champions of 1-AAAAA, and won both games to advance to a second round match-up with Jones County yesterday.
Whitewater won game one 7-2 behind a complete game no-hitter from Mackenzie Toler. Toler finished with nine strikeouts. Brielle Grubbs went 3-for-3 at the plate with six RBI, while Katie Cannington, Kylee Southers, Hannah Thomason and Rachel Williamson each got one hit.
Grubbs also had a big game in game two, driving in three runs in the 9-0 win. Toler struck out four batters and allowed four hits. Kim Perkins was 2-for-4 with a two run home run, Williamson, Cannington and Southers each added two hits and Toler chipped in one more.
Whitewater (22-10-1) played at Jones County (18-16-1) on Wednesday and won 3-0 and 5-1. The Lady Greyhounds had advanced to the second round with wins over Glynn Academy (7-2, 1-0). Whitewater won all three meetings between the two teams last year, while Jones County won the series in 2010.
Whitewater will take on Alatoona in the Elite Eight in Columbus next Thursday.
Landmark Christian (13-13) begins their state playoffs today at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (20-11-1). They lost to ELCA 2-0 in the region tournament.
