Local tennis teams face off, McIntosh and Starr's Mill show off strength
Starr’s Mill’s boys tennis team (10-1) beat St. Pius X 3-1 last Thursday and defeated Fayette County 5-0 on Tuesday.
Winners for the boys against Fayette County were Sebastien Schneider (8-2), Ben Lee (8-1) and Nick Borovsky (8-1) in singles and the doubles teams of Evan Thorsen and John Traeger (8-0), Jack Lloyd and Paul Balmes (8-0) and Matt Mosgrove and Daniel Goorsky (8-3).
The girls (10-1) topped St. Pius X 2-1 and defeated Fayette County 4-1. Winners against Fayette County were Samantha Curtis (9-7), Cassidy Sparkman (8-0) and the doubles teams of Lindsay Allison and Hannah Noltimier (8-0), Jennifer Kurtz and Irene Valli (8-1) and Caitlyn Bernhard and Zoe Bourdonnec (8-1). The girls match against St. Pius was suspended due to time issues and may be completely replayed at a later date.
Starr’s Mill’s boys are ranked second and the girls are ranked third in Class AAAA.
Starr’s Mill plays at Westminster today and hosts Whitewater at 4:30 p.m. next Tuesday at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
McIntosh’s boys and girls defeated both Northgate and Harris County by scores of 4-1 last Tuesday and Wednesday. This past Tuesday they faced East Coweta and both won 5-0. Winners for the boys were Austin Emmet, James Ranes and Corrie Pickering in singles, while the doubles teams of Biola Brinson and Andre Curiel and Josh Churan and Matthew Wilson won their matches. For the girls, Cassie Eldredge, Amelia Farrell and Cassandra Wincek won in singles, while Tori Hicks and Olivia Trevena won in a 3rd set tiebreak in the 1 doubles match and Kelbe Bishop and Breana Reynolds won at 2 doubles.
At Harris Co., the boys won 5-0 and girls won 4-1. Austin Emmet, Greg Pemu and Corrie Pickering won in singles play. Biola Brinson/Billy Pemu and James RAnes/Josh Churan won in doubles.
Cassie Eldredge and Lauren Wilson won insingles. Logan Boicourt/Carissa Osborne and Tori Hicks/Olivia Trevena won in doubles.
JV boys and girls also won at Harris Co.
McIntosh will play at Newnan today and at Upson-Lee on Tuesday.
Newnan’s boys lost to LaGrange 5-0 last Wednesday and fell to Cherokee 5-0 on Friday. The Lady Cougars lost to LaGrange 3-2. Carlie Griffies (6-3, 6-0) and Caroline Davis (6-2, 6-3) earned the wins in the match. They beat Newton 5-0 and lost to North Cobb 3-2 on Friday. Newnan will play at East Coweta next Tuesday.
Northgate’s boys (5-2) beat East Coweta 3-2 last Thursday and defeated Whitewater 3-0 on Monday in a rain shortened match. The girls bested East Coweta 3-2 and won over Whitewater 3-1.
Northgate will host Fayette County next Tuesday and Harris County next Wednesday.
East Coweta faced Fayette County last Wednesday. The boys won 5-0 with Jack Coffey (8-2), Saeyun Lee (8-0) and Matt Byers (8-0) winning singles matches, while Daniel Murillo and Moises Escobar won their doubles match 8-1. The other doubles match was won by forfeit. The lady Indians beat Fayette County 4-1. Winners were Taylor Heinz (8-1), Raelee Heinz (8-1) and the doubles teams of Paige Deweese/Manny Rincon (8-4) and Allie Shell and Rachel Weimarts (8-2).
Sandy Creek’s girls beat Locust Grove 3-2 last Tuesday, while the boys won 5-0. Sandy Creek plays at Drew today.
Whitewater’s boys defeated Griffin last Wednesday 4-1, while the girls lost 3-2. Whitewater faces Starr’s Mill on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
