Local wrestlers advance from state sectionals to state tournament

The Whitewater Wildcats will be well represented next week at the state tournament with 9 of 14 weight classes represented after the East Sectional at Loganville High School.

Austin Penland (138) won 1st place in the East Sectional. Brian Mitchell (113), Andrew Parsons (120), Jesse Cook (126) and Trevor Kennedy (132) took 4th. Andrew Mitchell (106) finished in 5th place. 6th place belonged to Max Sultan (145) and Andrew Skibiel (160). George Harris rounded out the Wildcates going to state with a 7th place finish. Dylan Davis (195) and Taylor Daly (220) finished in 9th place.

Fayette County’s Daniel Ward (120) placed second, while Wiliam McMahan (138) and John Beck (182) placed fifth. Corey Cleveland is an alternate at 170.

Starr’s Mill’s Austin Gilbert took seventh (132) and Luke Runyan placed fifth (170). Alex Ashley (285) placed ninth and is an alternate.

In AAA, Sandy Creek’s Trei Johnson (120) and Nick Karettis (138) both made the state tournament.

In Class A, Landmark Christian’s Caleb Greer (120) made the state tournament.

The GHSA State Traditional Tournament begins at 5 p.m. Thursday night at the Gwinett Civic Center.
