Canongate golfers sign with colleges
Starr’s Mill standout Andrew Garner has accepted an athletic scholarship to play Golf for Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.
Family and friends were on hand at Starr’s Mill Friday to celebrate the official signing. Garner joins a growing group of junior golfers playing out of Canongate Golf Clubs to sign a scholarship during the fall’s early signing period.
Garner has competed on the Canongate Junior tour for two years. He has played in numerous events on the Canongate Junior Tour, the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour, and the American Junior Golf Association. During the past two years he has been coached at Braelinn Golf Club by David Schreyer.
According to Andrew’s father Will, “Dave has done a wonderful job coaching, teaching, and mentoring Andrew.” He went on to praise Canongate Junior Tour Director Chuck Scoggins as he added, “Chuck and the entire Canongate team have done a phenomenal job in organizing the Canongate Junior tour, and providing guidance to us throughout the college recruiting process.”
Other Canongate junior golfers who have recently signed scholarships include Tyler Smith, and Kristin Bourg (both with Lee University); Stephen Amerson (Georgia College and State University); Jamison Renfroe (Piedmont College); and Shawn Yim (Augusta State University).
The Canongate Junior tour is a year-round competitive junior golf tour that is designed to both introduce young juniors to tournament play and take accomplished junior golfers to the next level. The tour consists of 250 players from age 7 to 17. These juniors compete in 25 events throughout the year and four "majors" held in the summer months. All competition throughout the year earns the players points toward becoming a team member in the coveted Nike Cup. Additionally, Canongate Junior Tour players earn points for the National Junior Scoreboard for the major events, increasing their exposure and ability to achieve a national ranking which results in greater likelihood of obtaining college scholarships.
Canongate Golf Clubs is a unique community of golf clubs consisting of 19 private clubs in the metro Atlanta area, four spectacular clubs in Houston and one in the Hilton Head area. For over 42 years, Canongate has provided the ultimate in golf variety and value. Canongate members now have access to 23 different clubs, with 26 championship courses available for their enjoyment.
