Three local teams make state basketball playoffs
The final day of the region 5-AAAA tournament was a good day for McIntosh and not so good for Fayette County’s boys and girls.
Sandy Creek's Wojcik wins second straight state title
One local wrestler captured a state title this weekend at the Georgia High School wrestling championships - Sandy Creek’s Derek Wojcik, a state champ last year as well.

One team is returning to the postseason for the first time in over a decade and the other has its sights set on reaching its third consecutive state title game. Both would like to keep playing this weekend and secure a home game to start the state playoffs.

“This game (the second round region tournament playoff game) is always the hardest,” said Fayette County head boys basketball coach Andre Flynn after his Tigers narrowly avoided an upset to the Starr’s Mill Panthers.

McIntosh High School will be the site of the region 5-AAAA boys and girls basketball tournament next week and the competition will be fierce.
FCHS selects 2010 induction class for Hall of Fame
The Fayette County High School Hall of Fame Committee has selected its induction class of 2010. The members of this year’s induction class include six athletes/coaches and three distinguished alumni.
Five Fayette high schools in top seven of area wrestling tournament
The area 5-AAAA wrestling tournament took place over the weekend and the teams from Fayette County did well. Whitewater placed second behind Alexander and head of Fayette County (3rd), Sandy Creek (4th), McIntosh (6th) and Starr’s Mill (7th). Overall, 32 wrestlers from the five schools have qualified for the AAAA state sectionals at Upson Lee this weekend.
Sweeps in rivalry games
This past weekend gave local basketball fans a chance to revisit what is one of the great rivalries in Fayette County high school athletics.
Signing Day - Dozens of area athletes ink deals with colleges
Today, Wednesday, Feb. 3, is National Signing Day and area schools will be buzzing with activity as numerous scholar atheltes will sign letters of intent to attend certain colleges and universities and represent them on the athletic fields as well as in the classrooms.
Holcombe name to Team USA softball roster
Former Alabama All-American catcher Ashley Holcombe of Fayetteville, was named to the 2010 Team USA softball roster as announced by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America. Holcombe, a graduate of Fayette County High School, was one of 17 athletes that were offered a USA Softball Athlete Agreement for the 2010 season.
