It was expected that Sandy Creek, the reigning Class AAAA state champions, would come out and make a statement against one of their county rivals in the season opener. And they did.
Tigers tougher after trying summer
Every high school football team has had to deal with a soaring heat index that has either limited practice time or kept the players operating outside of their pads. Fayette County’s football program has dealt with a little more. One of the many summer thunderstorms did some damage to the field, track and locker rooms and another storm limited a scrimmage with Jonesboro to three minutes before a makeup several days later.
FCHS football team visits Falcons training camp
Last season Fayette County High School’s football team won Michelin’s ABetterPlay.com “Play of the Season,” and as part of their grand prize the Tigers had the opportunity to be VIPs at Falcons Training Camp over the weekend.
Baseball draft nets 7 local players-update
Several local baseball players were selected by Major League teams in the annual amateur baseball draft earlier this week.
Leading the pack was shortstop Cartier Goodrum of Fayette County High School, picked 71st overall by the Minnesota Twins. His scouting report indicates the he has “plenty of speed and some raw power from both sides of the plate.”
Taken 137th overall by the Florida Marlins was Alvin Toles, an outfielder from Sandy Creek High School. Georgia Tech pitcher Andrew Robinson, a former Starr’s Mill standout, was drafted 363rd by the Houston Astros.
Bedrosian heads list of area Major League Baseball draftees
East Coweta High School knew it had an ace in pitcher Cam Bedrosian.
He now has made the jump to elite status, having been drafted 29th overall by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2010 Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Bedrosian has “outstanding stuff” including a mid-90s fastball and a solid slider, and he has a good feel for pitching, according to his MLB scouting report. At six feet tall, he doesn’t have a traditional pitcher’s height, but any lack in that department is more than made up with a heavy dose of competitiveness and mound smarts, according to the scouting report.
Region 5-AAAA girls team announced
The 2010 Girls All – Region Soccer Team for 5-AAAA was announced this afternoon and local girls are all over the team.
Holt leaving Gators for B.C.
Tessah Holt, a Fayette County High School graduate who played in two consectuive AAAA state championsip games for the Lady Tigers, recently announced her decision to transfer from the University of Florida to Boston College.
Whitewater boys finish as region runners up in track meet
Whitewater’s boys took second in the region 5-AAAA
championships, ahead of Starr’s Mill in third, but behind Banneker by 9.5 points. Sandy Creek took fifth, McIntosh palced sixth and Fayette County placed 11th.

Starr’s Mill’s girls won the region 5-AAAA championship with 104 points, 17 points better than Alexander in second place.
