It was expected that Sandy Creek, the reigning Class AAAA state champions, would come out and make a statement against one of their county rivals in the season opener. And they did.

East Coweta High School knew it had an ace in pitcher Cam Bedrosian.
He now has made the jump to elite status, having been drafted 29th overall by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2010 Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Bedrosian has “outstanding stuff” including a mid-90s fastball and a solid slider, and he has a good feel for pitching, according to his MLB scouting report. At six feet tall, he doesn’t have a traditional pitcher’s height, but any lack in that department is more than made up with a heavy dose of competitiveness and mound smarts, according to the scouting report.

More local teams moved on in the state playoffs with first round wins on Wednesday night.

Three local varsity boys soccer teams have taken the first step towards reaching the state final in their respective classifications. Their second steps will likely be significantly more challenging.

McIntosh, the top ranked team in AAAA, beat Clarke Central 3-0 on Tuesday to advance to a second round game with Hillgrove, ranked seventh in Class AAAA next Tuesday. Hillgrove (15-2-2) is 3-1-1 over their last five games. They have scored 87 goals this season and have allowed 25. The second round game will be played at McIntosh. A kickoff time has yet to be determined.

McIntosh’s boys and girls varsity soccer teams defeated East Coweta on Friday night in front of a home crowd.

There wasn’t much in between in basketball games played over the weekend. If a team won, it was a solid win and if it was a loss, it got kind of ugly.

Four of the five girls basketball teams from Fayette County schools will participate in the second annual Girls Night Out at Starr’s Mill this Saturday.

If you enjoyed all five county high schools facing off against each other in all sports, you'll have to hope for some non-region contests in the 2010-2011 athletic season.

East Coweta Indians (5-2, 4-2 region) at Morrow Mustangs (0-7, 0-6 region)

For Northgate, it was a chance to get back to a place they had been before, while for Starr’s Mill it was a chance to go where no other baseball team in school history had been. As for Landmark, they just wanted some revenge.
