Patriots and War Eagles advance to second round of football playoffs

DSC_6895_for-web.jpgThe Sandy Creek Patriots were in control of their state playoff game against Butler from the kickoff. Eric Swinney returned the opening kick 90 yards for a touchdown and the Patriots never trailed. They didn’t give up any points until late in the third quarter when the clock was constantly running because the Patriots were up by 55 points.

Patriots reach 39 straight wins and 4th straight region title

Making history seems like old hat for the two-time state champion Sandy Creek Patriots, but they made some more history tonight with their fourth straight region title, something that had never been done in the county before. The Patriots hosted Stockbridge and won 22-14.

Rallies lead to region losses for several local teams

Coaches will tell you that to beat a good team you usually have to play a solid all four quarters of the game. Against Northgate in the de facto sub-region 3-AAAA championship, the Whitewater Wildcats played a good first half.

Tigers get first win of year, Patriots push win streak to 37 games

The Fayette County Tigers had seen plenty of games slip away from them late this season. Tonight, they added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure their first victory of the season. Fayette County beat McIntosh 35-7 and the players gave their head coach, Mike Davis, a Gatorade bath to celebrate his first win at the school.

More region wins for Patriots, Panthers, Wildcats

DSC_0037.JPGIt was a short week of practice for Sandy Creek. They survived a region battle with Eastside last Saturday and took the field at home for homecoming against Locust Grove tonight. They certainly didn’t look tired. Rather, they appeared motivated to get a comfortable enough lead and enjoy the festivities.

Patriots and Panthers win season openers

DSC_5615.jpgWhitewater's Trey Wafford rushed for close to 180 yards and two touchdowns, but Sandy Creek’s newest players, JaQuay Williams and Shaquille Wiggins, made their impact felt early. Williams caught the first Sandy Creek play from scrimmage for a touchdown, a 70 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cole Garvin, and added another first half touchdown (58 yard touchdown pass), while Wiggins had two first interceptions.

2011 season starts for some high school teams this week

Several local high school football teams will play their scrimmage games this week.

Indians and Vikings join region champion Cougars in state baseball playoffs

The Newnan Cougars varsity baseball team (16-8, 12-1 region) clinched the region title with a 14-2 win over Luella on Tuesday.

Newnan boys, East Coweta girls advance in soccer playoffs

East Coweta’s boys soccer team saw their quest for a state title end abruptly. The Indians took on Hillgrove on Wednesday afternoon and lost 2-1.

Newnan defeated Kennesaw Mountain 2-0 and will now play at Camden County next Wednesday.

The day before, the opposite happened. East Coweta’s Lady Indians (15-4) beat North Cobb 1-0, while Newnan (12-4) lost to Hillgrove 5-1. East Coweta will host Tift County (14-5) next Tuesday.

East Coweta and Newnan soccer teams get wins

East Coweta’s boys (4-3-1) beat M.L. King 10-0 on Monday and Luella 4-0 on Wednesday. The girls (6-2) won both games 10-0.
