The snow will likely be a memory by tomorrow night, but the players for Fayette County's boys and girls basketball games have ice in their veins as they continue their quest to make their way back to the state championship games.

Region champs: Fayette boys and girls win titles

fchs girls with trophy.JPGThe Fayette County Lady Tigers played a hotly contested match with the Mays Lady Raiders tonight, a team they defeated by over 20 points in the regular season finale. This game was much different. Fayette County led 10-5 at the end of the first quarter but Mays held the edge in points at the end of the second and third quarter. The Lady Tigers had a one point lead with four minutes to go in the game and ended up winning 46-41.

Fayette boys and girls, Newnan boys play for region titles tonight

Douglas County’s Lady Tigers almost shocked the world on Friday in the region 5-AAAA tournament but undefeated Fayette County emerged victorious with a half court shot at the buzzer to win 37-34. Anma Onyeuku led the team with 18 points, while Tessah Holt, who hit the final shot, finished with 11.

Three more Fayette teams qualify for state basketball tournament

The boys basketball teams at Fayette County, Sandy Creek and McIntosh are assured of a spot in the Class AAAA state playoffs after getting wins on Thursday night in the region 5-AAAA tournament at Lithia Springs High School.

Chiefs, Cougars and Bobcats advance in region tourneys

McIntosh’s boys advanced to the second round of the Region 5-AAAA tournament at Lithia Springs with a 67-47 win over Northgate on Tuesday. Jeremy Lampkin led the Chiefs with 21 points, while Michael Chisholm added 18 and Josh Ball contributed 11. Northgate was led by 22 points from Brandon Hopkins and 12 points from Marquez Mobley.

The Chiefs will now face Banneker at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The winner will qualify for the state tournament and will take on the winner of the Fayette County/Mays or Whitewater game.

Mays played Whitewater Tuesday afternoon but a score has yet to be reported.

Mixed results for local teams in region basketball tournaments

Region basketball tournaments are in full swing during this winter break week and several local teams are now on a much longer break.
